How to Jump Rope

Want to learn how to jump rope? So you found out that jumping rope is a great exercise, burns lots of calories, doesn’t cost much to get started, and you can do it just about anywhere… but you don’t know how. Here are some simple steps you can take that will have you jumping rope in no time.

If you are brand new to jumping rope, you may want to practice doing the motion without the actual rope. That way you can get the feeling of jumping rope without worrying about tripping or hitting yourself with the rope.

Just try jumping rhythmically and land on the balls of your feet. You want to try to land on your toes with your heels off the ground, your feet level, and your weight distributed equally between both feet. Use your ankles as a spring to bounce up and down.

Once you get the motion down it is time to try it with the rope. You want to get a good quality jump rope that isn’t too light. A light jump rope will be difficult to turn. You also want to make sure you have good shoes and plenty of space so you don’t hit anything around you. Make sure the floor isn’t too hard (like concrete), as this is bad for your knees.

Step 1.

Stand up straight, grip the handles (one in each hand), and put the rope loop that is hanging down behind your feet.

Step 2.

Making sure you grip the handles firmly, start turning your wrists or your elbows in a clockwise motion so that you are throwing the rope over your head from the back of your feet to your toes. When the rope hits your toes jump over it so the rope is behind you again.Try to jump when you hear the rope hit the ground in front of you.

Step 3.

Continue swinging the jump rope in one fluid movement over your head.  You want to be able to swing the rope over and over again without stopping, jumping over the rope each time. Try to challenge yourself each time. See how many times you can jump in a row and try to improve each time. Start by turning the rope slowly and then faster and faster as you get used to the motion and feeling.

That is how to jump rope. You may want to start by jumping 100 times and then try to jump for longer and faster. Don’t worry if it is a challenge at first. It will get easier with practice.
